US power projects by technology: solar, storage, gas and more

FieldProspects tracks 8,057 planned power projects in the United States totalling 1,547.4 GW across 25 technologies, alongside 1,413.1 GW already operating nationwide. Solar has the most planned capacity at 568.6 GW, then battery storage at 435.8 GW and natural gas at 273.2 GW.

Data as of

What is a power project in this database?

A power project is one generating or storage unit, either planned or already operating. A unit is a single generator, so one power plant can appear as several projects.

Planned and operating capacity by technology

Planned and operating capacity point in different directions. Solar and battery storage have far more capacity planned than operating, while natural gas is the reverse: 584.6 GW operates and 273.2 GW is planned. Gas is 17.7% of planned capacity nationally and 41.4% of operating capacity.

Entry counts and capacity do not always agree. Nuclear has 20 planned entries but 29.2 GW, about 1.5 GW each, while hydro has 136 planned entries adding up to only 3.3 GW. Wind has 613 planned entries and 158.1 GW, less than the 167.1 GW already operating.

Solar, battery storage and natural gas have their own pages, with the states and grids leading each, the expected in-service years and the five largest planned entries. The other technologies appear in the table.
